Description:

Introduces prospective teachers to technology available for use in the literacy and language arts curriculum. Enables students to evaluate this technology by applying pedagogical approaches studied in methods courses. Concludes with a teaching project incorporating the use of technology.

Prerequisites:

Students should have completed Educational Technology  II. They should be familiar with basic concepts in hardware and software and proficient with common tools including word processors, e-mail, and Internet resources, and the creation of WWW pages.

How can we measure and improve our level of Technology Integration?

Assignments:  

Memorize LoTi levels and Higher Order Thinking verbs

Good Readers -- take a look at this project -- be sure to look at both videos the one the students made and the "making of" one the teacher made. What NETS*S are being addressed?  What LoTi level would it be, defend your choices, post in WebCT discussion area. Here is a link to a LoTi matrix to help you make your decision.

Assignments:  

Read Dreamweaver step-by-step directions, so that you are prepared to create a web page next class.

Find a site that has several pictures of one animal, e.g. a site that has several pictures of different tigers.

Spend some time looking at the MarcoPolo web site for a lesson to review for the Integrated Lesson Review project.

Class work:

Create a mini Web Resource Page in Dreamweaver based on The Hunter man and the Crocodile.  The purpose of this activity will be to help students comprehend the story by activating background knowledge, prior to reading the story. Some suitable areas of background knowledge include (but are not limited to) setting, characters, and theme (ecology and trust).

Students will find a lesson (from the MarcoPolo web site) that demonstrates technology integration in the area of language arts, complete a critique of the lesson and describe how this lesson could be used/adapted for the classroom. You must work with a partner on this project.

Graphics are related to the theme/purpose of the site, are thoughtfully cropped, are of high quality and enhance interest or understanding. The correct URL has been posted to WebCT in the correct discussion area.

 Students (NO partners for this project)  will be expected to review a software package (computer software, videodisc, CD-ROM, etc.) that could be used for elementary language arts -- do not review software that we have used  in class. (So not ClickNRead, MyAccess, or Inspiration/Kidspiration.)

You may use software that you or a friend owns, software from your teaching placement (classroom or library), or software from the ERC.

 Students (NO partners for this project) will be expected to review  an Internet site appropriate for use with elementary school aged children in the reading/language arts content area. (Be sure the reading level is appropriate for elementary school children.) Do not review sites we have used or discussed in class.

(May 5 by 8:00 pm)

1. Develop your Read Aloud lesson plans.

2. Decide how the use of the Internet could help support the skills you are teaching. Find web links.

3. Create your Web Resource Page and Teacher Resource Page.

4. Upload the web pages to your web space.

5. Post the link in the WebCT discussion board under Web Resource Page.

 

This should be a web page that contains activities that extend your Read Aloud lesson -- comprehension or writing. The activities that you plan should make use of sites on the Internet that can support the skills that your lesson is teaching.  You must work with your practicum partner on this project, please be sure that both your names are on the Teacher Resource Page.
