Research Interests/Teaching Projects

My current research interests are in coastal and estuarine geophysics.  We are
applying high-resolution geophysical
methods (e.g., ground penetrating radar,
side-scan sonar, chirp sonar, RoxAnn acoustic, multibeam bathymetry)
integrated with sediment sampling techniques (e.g., hand-augering, vibracoring,
grab sampling) to study
the shallow subsurface of the on-land coastal plain and
the bottom and
sub-bottom of the marine inland bays, estuaries, and inner-most
continental
shelf of the Mid-Atlantic region.

Our current major research effort is in partnership with Delaware's Department
of Natural Resources and Environmental Control and Delaware's National
Estuarine Research Reserve to map the benthic habitat and sub-bottom
sediments of Delaware Bay.

I'm also involved in two teaching and research projects in science
education. With funding from the National Science Foundation and working
with other University of Delaware faculty from
the Departments of Biological
Sciences and Physics and Astronomy, the
School of Education, and the
Mathematics and Science Education Resource Center, we are conducting a
research project using pedagogical context knowledge as a framework to
examine changes in preservice and inservice K-8 teachers' understandings of
science and pedagogy across a reform-based Professional Development
Continuum. Also
with funding from the National Science Foundation, I'm
one of the co-princial investigators along with faculty from the Physics and
Astronomy, Chemisty and Biochemistry, and Biological Sciences
Departments, that has formed a partnership with the New Castle County
Vocational Technical School District to institute a GK-12 Fellowship Program.
In each year of this program,
nine full-time UD graduate students in the
sciences will be selected to serve as fellows and they will be paired with
high school science teachers from NCCoVoTech. These pairs, along with
the principal investigators, will form a learning community that will have
the opportunity to examine and to reflect on current issues in science
education while specifically addressing critical needs in teaching
science in vocational technical high schools.
