New York Botanic Gardens
NYGB is a 250 acre garden blossoming with the sights and scents of spring..."Each day at NYGB brings new awakenings, from flowering cherry, magnolia, and crabapple trees to magnificent springtime favorites like lilacs, daffodils, azaleas, tulips, and more."
Furthermore, we got to see two special displays. "Darwin's Garden: An Evolutionary Adventure Display" explores the lifework of Darwin and how plants adapt to their environment. "Aricula Theater" is a fantastic display of aricula primroses. For more information...
Mt. Cuba Center Mt. Cuba Center is a 650-acre non-profit horticultural institution in northern Delaware that is dedicated to the study, conservation, and appreciation of native plants. We took a guided tour thorugh their woodland wildflower gardens.For more information...
Ag Day The biggest Hort Club event of the year has come and gone! It was amazing how many people we had waiting outside for the sale, and how quickly we sold out of plants! All our volunteers looked great in their T-shirts. Thanks to their help, the day ran smoothly. Ag Day Pricing We organized & priced up the plants for Ag Day, then went and had a great time at TGIFriday's!
Ag Day Poster Party We enjoyed pizza & each other's company while making some fantastic posters to use at the Hort Club plant sale on Ag Day!
Your Day in Delaware This event allowed clubs in the College of Agriculture & Natural Resources to advertise themselves to prospective students.
Ladew Topiary Gardens Harvey S. Ladew (1887-1976) created 15 thematic "garden rooms" on 22 acres of his 250-acre Maryland property. The Garden Club of America described Landew's Topiary Gardens as "the most outstanding topiary garden in America". We enjoyed the Topiary Gardens, as well as the 1.5 mile Nature Walk through woods and fields. For more information...
Camping at Shenendoah The Hort Club's first camping trip was to Shenandoah! We did lots of hiking, fishing, sightseeing, and more! For more information, please see the Shenandoah Park's website and the National Park Service's website, featuring Shenandoah Park.
Tomato Transplanting We transplanted like crazy so our tomato & pepper plants will be ready for Ag Day! Afterwards we enjoyed dinner at TGI Friday's!
Longwood Gardens A small group of us went to enjoy the wonderful orchid displays in the conservatory of Longwood Gardens. The "Orchid Extravaganza" featured thousands of orchid blooms and Longwood Gardens' award-winning Living Wall of Orchids. For more information....
Grotto's Fundraiser The Hort Club passed out promotional fliers. Anyone who bought food at Grotto's Pizza and presented a flier to their waiter had 20% of their bill given to the Hort Club!
Shamrock Sale The Hort Club sold "shamrocks" and lovely cineraria plants for St. Patrick's Day!
Nottingham Park This 651 acre park sits atop an out-cropping of sepentine stone greater than one square mile in size--one of the largest serpentine barrens on the East Coast. It is a popular picnicking spot that offers nine pavilions, as well as informal picnic areas, play lots, and rugged trails. For more information...
Philly Flower Show With a theme this year of "Jazz It Up", the dozens of displays had a French Quarter theme. All of the top local lanscapers and florits really went all-out to make some spectacular exhibits! For more information...
Ag Day Transplanting This was one of several transplanting sessions we will be holding in preparation for Ag Day. Thanks to everyone who came to help us out!
Spring Semester Meeting The Hort Club met to discuss our upcoming trips, this year's T-shirts, and officer elections for next year. The current Hort Club officers strongly encourage all of our members to run for an officer position for next year if interested.
Valentine's Day Fundraiser The Hort Club sold roses & carnations for two days in a Valentine's Day funraiser. We met on the 12th to prepare the flowers for sale. Then we sold the flowers on 13th in Trabant and 14th in Perkins. Although we did not make much money in the end, we learned some things that can help make next year's sale a bigger success.
Activities Night We ran a booth at Activities Night in order to recruit new members and advertise our Valentine's Day flower sale.
End-of-Semester Party We gathered at Dr. Frey's house to eat delicious tacos and have fun! We spent a portion of the evening discussing ideas for next semester's Hort Club events and reflecting on events from this past semester.
Longwood Gardens We enjoyed the "Winter Lights" displays at this world-renowned garden estate of Pierre S. DuPont. Attractions included the fountain light show, ice skating show, walks lined with lit trees, and special exhibits in the conservatory.
Tree Planting Volunteers went to help plant trees in Wilmington, (and got free lunch for doing so!). The event was sponsored by the Wilmington Beautification Comission, the Delaware Center for Horticulture, and the City of Wilmington Parks and Recreation Department
Tyler Arboretum In 1825, Jacob and Minshall Painter collected and planted over 1000 species of trees and shrubs to start the Tyler Arboretum. Some of these trees are still standing today. We saw the Giant Sequoia, admired many trees over a hundred years old, wandered through the Meadow Maze, visited the Pinarium, and enjoyed each other's company during our time at the Arboretum.
Mount Cuba Mount Cuba consists of 650 acres dedicated to the study, conservation, and appreciation of plants native to the Appalachian Piedmont Region through garden display, education, and research. We explored many of the trails that run through the property and saw a lovely array of common and unusual wildflowers, shrubs, and trees.
Grace Chapman, a Longwood Graduate Fellow gave a presentation about the Martin McLaren scholarship. Grace was a 2005-2006 recipient and she was able to travel to the UK for 10 months to study traditional horticulture, education, and landscape architecture among other things. U.S. Botanical Gardens Located on the National Mall across from the U.S. Capitol in Washington D.C., the USBG is run by the Congress of the United States. Features include the Rose Garden, Butterfly Garden, Lawn terrace, First Ladies' Water Garden, Regional Garden, Outdoor amphitheater, Bartholdi Park's historic Frederic Auguste Bartholdi fountain, and the newly renovated Conservatory featuring more than 3,000 plant specimens!
Gibraltar & Goodstay While visiting the lovely Gibraltar property, we met with the head gardener there. We saw pictures of the property from decades ago, and got to explore the old Sharp mansion! The house was enormous and a very interesting historical site. We then got lunch and spent some time relaxing at nearby Goodstay Garden, one of the oldest gardens of Delaware and situated on UD's Wilmington campus.
Ag Fall Social During this event we enjoyed free pizza and soda while meeting people from other Ag College clubs.
End-of-Semester Party The rain couldn't keep us away! Though we had to miss out on volleyball, the Hort Club still enjoyed a night of food food and company at the Freys' house. There was hotdogs, hamburgers, crabs, and ice cream! After eating, we elected our new club officers. We also shared some gifts with the previous year's officers, our graduating senoirs, and the Freys.
Chanticleer The former estate of the Rosengarten family has a garden of whimsy and fantasy—becoming a new garden each season. This is one of the Club’s favorite gardens!
Ag Day This is an all-day event sponsored by the Ag College. The Horticulture Club ran a plant sale, the proceeds of which will go towards funding the Club’s events for the following year. Everyone who helped us out got a great free t-shirt!
Ag Day Plant Pricing We arranged and priced plants for Ag Day. Then we went out and had a most excellent dinner at TGIF, on the clubs tab! Keep in mind for next year that volunteering to help with Ag Day has some great benefits. ;)
Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens The formal aspects of this beautiful garden in Washington, DC are at their peak in summer, but we will explore its impressive collection of spring aquatic wildlife in addition to its formal gardens.
New York Botanical Garden We visited the world-class garden during its annual Orchid Show. We got to see the NYBG's fantastic orchid collection and learn about orchids and how to care for them from experts!
Ag Day Transplanting This was a preparation for the Ag Day plant sale.
Shamrock Sales In preparation for St. Patrick's Day we held 2 shamrock sales (we were selling live shamrocks and also club shirts). The sales were geared towards letting the student body know more about the Horticulture Club.
Philadelphia Flower Show One of the largest and most renowned flower shows in the world!
Longwood Gardens We visited the word famous garden estate of Pierre S. du Pont at a time when the large Conservatory was brimming with spring glory.
Spring Semester Meeting We kicked off the semester with a meeting to go over this year's upcoming events. We also saw a presentation for the PLSC department's study abroad program (they are going to Brazil next year). There was a t-shirt raffle and great food--California Tortilla & Papa John's!
End-of-Year Party We ended the year with a party at the home of our club advisor, Dr. Frey. As always, the food and company were great.
Longwood Gardens Winter Lights The Longwood Gardens lights festival is a beatiful and fun event. Because this event is not strictly horticulture-related, we will be not be covering the admission cost to attend. Regular club members will have to pay full price to attend the festival, while active members will get a significant discount, but will still have to pay something. To be considered an active member, you must have participated in many club events, such as trips and/or our fall plant sales.
Mum Sale Our final plant sale of the semester has come and gone. We were selling indoor & outdoor mums.
Longwood Chrysanthemum Show One of the largest annual Chrysanthemum displays in the country highlights the many forms of this culturally significant plant. Asian-influenced designs, cultural activities, and dance and martial arts performances enhance this dramatic annual makeover of Longwood's conservatories.
Mum Sale We recently had our first fall plant sale. We were selling a selection of poinsettias, mums, and asters!
Welkinweir The 197-acre former estate of Everett and Grace Rodebaugh includes numerous hiking trails set within the natural beauty of northern Chester County, PA.
Barnes Foundation Arboretum The recently restored home of Dr. and Mrs. Barnes includes a considerable art collection, including extensive holdings by Picasso, Matisse, Cezanne, Renoir, and Modigliani, and African sculpture. The grounds, first developed as an arboretum in the 1880's, consist of an impressive collection of specimen trees and shrubs, including many that are not usually hardy in this area.
Longwood Gardens Plant Explorer's Conference This exhibition is a celebration of Longwood's more that 50 years of plant exploration exhibitions. The speakers brought together for this one-time event include some of the biggest names in the industry, offering a rare chance to hear the explorers in their own words.
Fair Hill Located in Cecil county, Fair Hill is the former estate of the late William du Pont Jr. It includes endless hiking trails, scenic beauty and historial buildings and structures...Including a mid-19th century covered bridge! Our faculty advisor, Dr. Frey, led us as we explored the tranquil beauty offered at this 5,613-acre destination!
Fall Semester Meeting We had our first and only meeting of the semester. Everyone enjoyed Papa John's pizza and soda while our club officers discussed our upcoming events and this year's goals. End-of-Year Party Our last event of the '06 spring semester was the End-of-Year party, hosted by our beloved Dr. Frey and Mo! The party was great-- crab, Paul's fruit salad, drinks (only if you were 21 or older and not driving!), and of course, some wild volleyball!
