Zeta Sigma's History
By Michael Gallagher
Edited by Marta Dybowski
The Zeta
Sigma chapter of Alpha Phi Omega began on February 16, 1948, when
H. Bruce Ayars sent a letter to the national headquarters concerning
the founding of a local chapter at the University of Delaware. The
first meeting of students
interested in joining was held on February 24, and on April 15 this
group of students
petitioned for acceptance. On May 24th, a ritual team from Delta Zeta
chapter from the University of Pennsylvania initiated these men into
Alpha Phi Omega. Also present was Sidney J. North, national secretary
and Dean Arno Nowotny, national president. Zeta Sigma chapter was
chartered on the same day and H. Bruce Ayars was elected the first
chapter president. In late November 1948, the chapter held its first
service project, a tree clearing at Camp Rodney. In December of 1948,
Edmund J Vaklyes became our first delegate to a national convention.
The Zeta Sigma chapter was re-activated in the
Spring of 2001 after a period of inactivity. Currently the chapter
holds a large active membership and is involved in many projects around
the greater
Newark/Wilmington area.
