UD Alumnus to compete in National Selection Regatta #2

ivanatworlds

Ivan Baldychev '06 will be competing in this upcoming weekend's National Selection Regatta #2. Baldychev was a standout oarsmen while at UD, leading the lightweight squad to national prominence. Last summer he made his first United States National team competing in the Lightweight Men's single, and finished 6th at the World Championships held in Munich, Germany. At the NSR #2 Baldychev will be competing in the Lightweight cox-less pair event.

At the first NSR, Balychev raced in the Men's Lightweight single event. He cruised to victory almost 3 seconds over the second place Dan Urevick-Ackelsberg, a member of the US Rowing Training Center . "I raced well at the first NSR," said Baldychev. "I'm currently training in Princeton in the Lightweight [pair without coxswain]. If I'm able to post good results this upcoming weekend, then I'll have to pull an adequate 2k erg test to be invited to the Olympic Selection Camp. That would be a great honor since only 8 lightweights are invited to the camp. My goal however is to make the Olympic Lightweight [cox-less four] at the camp."

Freshmen Lightweights Upset Navy in Annapolis

The lightweight squad traveled to Annapolis, Maryland this past weekend to compete against the United States Naval Academcy in an EARC race.

The Hens were victorious in the Freshmen 8 race. UD and Navy battled the length of the course, but they were able to cross the line 1.6 seconds over the Midshipmen. "I'm very excited with the results from this past weekend," Coach Joe Kleiman said. "I'm very proud of them in that they were able to keep their composure in the race up against a very tough Navy boat."

In the Hen's Varsity 8 race, Navy crossed the line in 6:07.6, with UD coming in second with 6:24.5. UD held contact with Navy until the midway point of the race, where Navy surged ahead.

In the JV 8 race Navy was again victorious over the Hens. The Midshipmen crossed the line in 6:12.8 followed by their 3V in 6:22.8 and UD in at 6:31.2. In the Varsity 4 race, Navy edged UD by 12.7 seconds.

In the Second Freshmen 8 race Navy crossed the line in 6:42.7 to UD's 6:54.9. The Hen's were able to hold off Navy's third novice crew by 2.5 seconds.

Hen's Freshmen 8 Victorious in Tennessee

SIRA Novice 8

The winning Freshman/Novice 8.

The entire Heavyweight squad traveled to Oak Ridge, Tennessee to compete in the Southern Intercollegiate Rowing Association Championship this past weekend.

Racing began Saturday, with the Freshmen 8 cruising to a victory in their heat to position themselves for the A/B semifinal later that day. The crew lead the field the entire race and crossed the line in 6:25.8, almost 7 seconds faster than second place Marietta College. In the Varsity 8's heat, they led to almost the half way mark where Grand Valley State and Georgia Tech were able to pull even and ahead. With 500 meters to go the Varsity 8 charged through Georgia Tech and held contact with the Grand Valley crew to finish in 2nd place, 1.7 seconds off Grand Valley and 3.8 ahead of Georgia Tech.

In the Saturday semifinal racing, the Freshmen 8 once again led the entire race and was victorious. They crossed the line in 6:15.9, 7.33 seconds ahead of second place Grand Valley to land the top seed for the Grand Final. The JV8 drew a tough semifinal and found themselves in 5th place with 500 meters left in the race. However, the JV's sprint was impressive and they were able to walk through Georgia Tech and Emory in the last part of the race to finish 3rd and land a spot in the Grand Final. The Varsity 8 also had a slow start to their semifinal and found themselves in 5th place at 1500 meters left. The crew was able to move back on the field and remained in 3rd place throughout the bulk of the race, exchanging leads with Florida Tech for the 3rd and final spot to the Grand Final. However in the last 100 meters FIT pulled even and ahead to claim the last spot, putting UD in the Petite Final.

Sunday racing began with the Freshmen 8 claiming the SIRA championship. They found themselves in 2nd place off the start of the race behind Virginia, but were able to move through the field and held a comfortable margin for the remainder of the race. UD crossed the line in 6:14.7, 4.67 seconds ahead of second place Virginia and 5.4 seconds ahead of 3rd place Georgia Tech. "I'm very proud of our eight," Coach Joe Kleiman said. "Now our focus for the crew shifts to preparation for the upcoming Dad Vail Regatta."

The JV8 placed 6th in their Grand Final behind St. Joseph's, Temple, UVA, Jacksonville and Purdue. The crew battled with Purdue for 5th place until the midway point where the Boilermakers were able to push ahead. "The JV had a tough race, but they are a young crew so they still have plenty of room to improve upon the SIRA results," Kleiman said.

In the Varsity 8 Petite Final, the Hen's found themselves in third place at the 500 mark behind Georgia Tech and St. Joseph's. At the 1000 meter mark they were able to pull through St. Joe's and regain contact with Georgia Tech, however GT was able to hold off the UD sprint to cross the line in first with 6:12.60 to UD's 6:13.68.
