Our History
When Indiana Asbury (now DePauw University) finally opened
its doors to women in 1867, the women students were looking for somewhere to make friends
and find support and encouragement for their academic pursuits. Kappa Alpha Theta, the
first Greek letter fraternity known among women, was established on January 27,1870
by Bettie Locke, Alice Allen, Bettie Tipton, and Hannah Fitch. In more than 130 years since,
Kappa Alpha Theta has grown to 124 chapters all across the United States and Canada. The
Zeta Tau chapter was founded in 1995 at the University of Delaware. Our colors are black
and gold, our symbols are the kite and twin stars, and our flower is the pansy. We are
proud to be sisters of First Lady Laura Bush, Sheryl Crow, and Amy Grant.
