The mission of Lutheran Campus Ministry at the University of Delaware is to express our Faith in God through fellowship, outreach and service.

Message from the Pastor

Hi, friends!

2009 is off and running — welcome back to campus, and welcome back to Lutheran Campus Ministry!  Those of you who were on campus for winter term, I hope you weren’t working and studying all the time!  Those of you who were studying in Europe or Latin America or in the South Pacific — I hope you’ve got lots of great stories to tell.  Those of you who worked, I hope you’ve got great stories to tell, too!  And if you had the luxury of just relaxing for the entire time ... I know you’ve got things to tell about.  To all of you, welcome back to your home away from home.  We’ve been here all along, with Tuesday evening suppers and worship — and we’ve been here for events like FISH, too:  Campus Ministry stays alive, even when the crew of people doing the ministry disperses to all over the globe.

One of the stories you’ll be even better able to tell than before is about the presence of God in Christ and the people of God in the various corners of the globe that you’ve seen.   I find it amazing:  a person might not even be thinking of God … and then, all of a sudden, there’s a flash or a gesture — something surprising —and you realize you’ve just had an encounter with God and the strange place you find yourself in is suddenly no longer foreign but familiar — albeit in an odd sort of way.

There will be opportunity to tell of your experiences, too:  on Tuesday evening, or in a Bible study.  The appearance of God in strange places is an Epiphany theme; two weeks after you return we’ll celebrate the Day of the Transfiguration.  And then we continue with Ash Wednesday and the weeks of Lent:  all of these are different times to tell of how God has been made known to you.  Welcome back!

Peace and Power,

PB

Service Spot

Please contact Amelia Blenderman at ameliaib@udel.edu if you are interested in helping out with Fellowship in Serving the Hungry (FISH) and any other service projects.

Service may be the last word of our mission statement, but it does not make it any less important! We have many opportunities to serve in the Spring 2009 semester. These include FISH, our famed grocery distribution, Habitat for Humanity, and Relay for Life. There are flyers in this newsletter to describe those events and give some of the details. As always, feel free to email lutherans@udel.edu for more information.

Perhaps the most pressing need for service is for members of the ministry to remember their food offering on Tuesday nights. The items below are suggested items which can be found at the markets on campus. You can always bring in any non-perishable food item, or you can even give a monetary donation on Tuesday nights.

February 3, 2009: Pack of Cookies

           February 10, 2009: Peanut Butter

           February 17, 2009: Jelly

February 24, 2009: Can of Soup

           March 1, 2009: Macaroni & Cheese

Remember the words of our Savior, “Truly I tell you, just as you did it to one of the least of these who are members of my family, you did it to me.” Be inspired to help your neighbor and serve with the Lutheran Campus Ministry.

Why LCM?

This month’s contributor is Abby Wolfe, a senior majoring in nursing.

I’ll start out saying that I’m a relatively new member of LCM at UD. I’m a senior nursing student and I started attending LCM during the Spring Semester of 2008 when I was a junior. Why did I wait so long to become part of this wonderful group, you ask? Good question! I don’t even know how to answer that.

I was on a mission to find new people to spend time with while at school, and I remembered hearing about LCM from some members of my home church, The Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd, in Wilmington, Del. I just figured I would give it a try…I didn’t really know anyone from LCM that well, and there was a camping trip coming up that would force me to get out of my comfort zone and meet lots of new people. And that’s the history. The camping trip to French Creek State Park got me hooked and I haven’t been the same ever since. Everyone accepted me for my goofiness and welcomed me into the group like I was family. Without their knowledge, the members of LCM helped me through a rough time in my life, and I am forever grateful for that.

So why do I continue to be a part of LCM? I get to be a part of a truly remarkable group — I am able to worship God and spend time with my family away from home! When I am with the people of LCM, I am allowed to be myself… and silly or not, they encourage me to be a better Christian.

I want to say thank you to all of the LCM members for a wonderful experience. Even though I’ll be graduating in May, I sincerely hope to continue being a part of LCM and worshiping

Christ with future members.
