Lutheran Campus Ministry

at the University of Delaware

The mission of Lutheran Campus Ministry at the University of Delaware is to express our Faith in God through fellowship, outreach and service.

Message from the Pastor

Hi, friends:

The weather is very nice right now, and there are reminders that Spring Break is coming in a very short time.  My thought is that it can almost not come soon enough:  I went on a trip to Chicago at the end of March — the last of travels for a while.  The week following offered a welcome break.

In the midst of this I wonder how Lutheran Campus Ministry can offer us all a place of grace.  We know about grace as forgiveness and healing.  “Grace” can also be what we give in God’s name to people we don’t know:  a mission trip to New Orleans; the groceries we offer to the families who come to us through FISH.  But sometimes at the university, grace can be a place where we can go and just “hang out” and relax with friends, with no pretensions and no expectations.  Or grace can be a snow day, an unexpected vacation from classes.  Or grace can be a little sleep after finishing a tough exam or a hard essay.

The important thing to remember is that it’s OK to ask for what you need.  We’re coming through Lent and soon we’ll celebrate the cross and resurrection.  There’s grace enough to go around:  of all kinds, whether through an act of kindness received or given.  Give yourself a “grace break” this spring:  maybe an example of each.

Peace and power,

PB

Why LCM?

This month’s contributor is Richard Tilley, a freshman with a major in music education and a minor in church music. His hometown is York, Pa.

When I arrived at the University of Delaware, I already knew that I wanted to join the Lutheran Campus Ministry.  My entire life, I have been raised as a Lutheran, and my mother has held several organ and music jobs at Lutheran churches throughout my community.  I was really excited to hear that U.D. had a Lutheran Campus Ministry, and I was first introduced to the ministry at Activities Night in Trabant University Center at the beginning of Fall Semester. I decided to go to an event that the ministry was holding at Pauls’ Chapel one Friday night, and I just randomly walked in the door and looked at the group of people playing games.  I'm sure people were a little surprised to see me just standing there, but everyone was really nice and welcomed me immediately with plenty of food! The overall friendliness and immediate acceptance from LCM was really welcoming and made me feel very comfortable as a freshman entering the university!  I really enjoyed getting to know so many new faces, especially people that I would never have gotten to meet outside of LCM.  I began my ventures to church with LCM on Sunday mornings, and I soon found the ordeal of learning a new way of communion! Honestly, I still don't understand how the new process of communion works!  One of the best features of LCM is the brunch after church on Sunday mornings.  It is definitely worth it!  Also, having such a supportive pastor as Pastor Bruce is wonderful!  He was more than happy to welcome me into the ministry, and he even took time to come see me perform with the U.D. symphonic band.  The entire support the LCM has given me has added to my overall experience here at the University of Delaware, and I look forward to my involvement with the LCM throughout the rest of my time here at U.D.!
