The purpose of our affiliate is to work toward the improvement of the educational, vocational, and social condition of blind and visually impaired citizens of Delaware. We cooperate with public and private agencies and programs which provide services to the blind and visually impaired community. We participate in public education and outreach programs to inform Delawareans about issues of importance to the blind/visually impaired community.
If you are a visually impaired person yourself, a family member, spouse or friend of a visually impaired/blind individual, a potential employer or educator of visually impaired/blind individuals, or just generally interested in issues of interest to the blind/visually impaired community, we invite you to join us as a member. Dues are $10.00 per year. We welcome individuals from all backgrounds and levels of vision loss.
We currently meet in the lounge of the New Ark United Church of Christ, 300 East Main Street, Newark Delaware 19711. Meetings are generally held from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on the second Saturday of the month, but times and locations may change. If you are interested in attending a meeting, please drop us a note to confirm this information.
Some typical issues discussed at recent meetings include raising funds for our scholarship, transportation issues, improving vocational and independent living services, developing a public outreach program through our web site and literature, getting involved with blind students and their parents, improving library services, and improving cooperation between disability organizations. We also offer a $500.00 scholarship for students pursuing post-secondary education. We have an annual state DCBVI convention in November, and we hold a DCBVI picnic in July. Our parent organization is the American Council Of The Blind (ACB), which was founded in 1961. The organization produces a monthly publication called The Braille Forum. ACB also holds a national convention annually. It produces a service called the Washington Connection, which informs members and others about legislative issues of importance to the blind/visually impaired community on a national level. ACB also offers scholarships and operates an internet-based radio service called ACB Radio. For further information, visit the ACB web site.
