Overview - What kind of a person are you? What kind of person would you like to be? What are your strengths and weaknesses? How would you describe yourself to someone you just met? In order to be a healthy person one must be able to answer these questions. Our purpose for  this project is to create and design a newsletter about yourself that focuses on what kind of a person you are.

Your newsletter will have 5 feature articles.  You will write the articles as assignments for your Writing Class. Directions for each article are:

Power Point Presentation

Overview - The producer of "60 Minutes" has read the persuasive term paper you wrote for your Writing Class.  S/he is impressed and has asked you and your partner to create an 8 minute 'spotlight' feature to be presented on the show. In the 'spotlight' feature you both will present the ideas in your term papers. As a team, decide if you are persuading viewers for/against. You will create a Power Point presentation that will provide the visual backup for your 'spotlight' feature.  The presentations will be performed and filmed in your Writing Class.

College Spreadsheets

Overview: What college do you want to attend?  How do you go about choosing a college?  What do you look for in a college?  How will you know that a college is a good match for you? In this project we will use a spreadsheet to compare colleges that offer the majors that you need to successfully plan your careers. The purpose of this project is to help you analyze college choices.

Technology Tools: (Excel 2000)
Toward a balanced, attractive, and easily read spreadsheet, you will need to use:
Titles/ text labels
Formatted numbers
Formulas
Graphs
Design elements (color, fonts, borders/ lines, etc)

Project Contents:
Use the link below to find three colleges that offer the majors you would need in order to be successful in at least two of the careers that interest you.
 http://www.collegenet.com (try the search option).
Record the following information about each college:

tuition and fees,

room and board,

books, (if you can't find this number estimate $700)

travel costs, (estimate -- how many trips you will make home (minimum 8) times how much it will cost for a round trip (you may have to check airline prices; if you plan to drive miles*.40 is a good estimate) , if you plan to have a car on campus add $200 for a parking permit plus weekly gas money (40 weeks times $25 per week)-- use a formula)

spending money. (estimate -- there are 40 weeks in a school year times how much money you will need each week -- use a formula; the further away the college is, the more you should estimate per week).

Add a formula here to total all costs.

Skip 2 rows and record:

school size, (this is the full-time undergraduate enrollment)

location (city, small town, suburban, rural),

distance from your home, (in miles and driving hours -- go to http://www.mapquest.com and click on driving directions, put in your home city and state on the left -- on the right put in the city and state of the college, click 'get directions',  at the top of the directions will be listed the distance in miles and how long it will take to drive there.)

average high school GPA of freshmen

average SAT score of freshmen

what majors they have that are of interest to you, (each on its own line)

what clubs/sports they have that are of interest to you, (each on its own line)

any other criteria that is important to you.

Print out:

Turn your formulas on and print. Try to keep it to one page.

It would be helpful to graph some of the above information. Use a stacked column graph to compare the costs of each college. Your graph should have three bars -- one for each college. Print the data and the graph.  Try to keep it to one page.

Scoring Rubric - College Spreadsheet
