Our garden originated as an idea
in the spring of 1995. Teachers passed the open courtyard between
pods at least five times a day. The browning grass and non-discript
landscape did little to stimulate the imaginations of students and faculty
alike. During one such passing Mrs. Frank observed a butterfly floating
around the open space, searching for a flower or leaf to light upon.
The image of a huge garden and hundreds of butterflies floating freely
sent her hurrrying to share her idea with other teachers in her pod. |

| Six months later a Dupont Mini
Grant was presented to Elizabeth Frank, Lynne Bloom, Janet Hall, and Linda
Hand. Countless hours of physical labor ensued and finally, on October
8, 1997 our garden was officially dedicated. The guest list included
dignitaries from the state of Delaware, local radio celebraties, and hundreds
of children, parents,University, and district personal. |

The children sang a butterfly song
written by Marty Burke, Marshall music teacher, and read poems written
by students. Thirty five Painted Lady Butterflies were released in
the garden as the children and guests looked on. |
| Six years later our garden continues
to florish and provide homes for hundreds of insects. More than eight
hundred students use the garden as a living classroom, studying the life
cycles of insects and animals found within. Children continue growing
annuals and perennials to refurbish the raised beds and arbor area within
the garden. Our PTA supplies funding for seeds, soil, and 12 cubic
yards of mulch each year. We have recently added an arbor to the rear entrance.
We are growing Trumpet Vines around the arbor for our Hummingbird friends
that have begun to arrive. |
