Dear Parents and Guardians,
I am so excited about all of the new and challenging situations, which await your child and myself. We will be working with the Houghton Mifflin reading series, an investigative math series, writer's workshop, and numerous hands-on situations in the science and social studies areas. Your child will be challenged with word problem skills, problem solving skills, and numerous concept skills. All of these challenges will center on a hands-on approach. Your child will be INVOLVED in our classroom.
Your child will have NIGHTLY HOMEWORK. Our regular schedule will not begin until Sept. 5th. Your child will receive a spelling list every Monday. There will be 10 regular words and 5-10 challenge words each week. Your child will be expected to master the weekly words and will be expected to spell these words correctly during daily writing. We will have spelling tests each Friday. Please practice these words nightly. You will also receive a nightly math sheet. I will give your child a daily planner and homework folder the first day of class. Please put all of your child's homework for the day into the folder and return it each day. In addition to the nightly spelling and work assignment, please spent about 15-30 minutes reading with your child. If your child tells you there is no homework, please check with me! I will not give assignments over weekends unless it is a special occasion; however, there will be homework every other night. The only exception will be on shortened weeks such as Thanksgiving week or testing weeks.
Our schedule will be as follows:
Lunch is 11:55:-12:25
Recess is 12:30-1:00
Specials are from 10:20-11:05
Tuesday-Art
Wednesday-Gym
ThursdayHealth
Friday-Library
We will have Art on Tuesday, so you might want to dress your child in older clothing on that day or send in a smock or old shirt to cover clothing. Please remember to dress in older clothing and wear sneakers for Gym.
Your child will also need ----. Below is a list of some of the items to send in with your child.
1. Pencils Please - Label if possible with initials and permanent marker
2. Crayons - not more than 24 if possible
3. Tissues
4. glue sticks (sticks don't make a gooey mess in the desks!) Please Label!
5. Hand Sanitizer
6. Scissors - Fiskar works great! Please label!
7. A box to hold the above mentioned items (excluding tissues and book)
We will be involved in many fun-filled activities, which might require an extra pair of hands. If you are interested in helping out in the classroom or would like to be a Homeroom Parent please indicate this on the sheet below and return it with your child. Dads, you can be Homeroom Parents too! It's always wonderful to have a Dad along on field trips as well!
This year we will be using an investigative Math series which will include TERC and we will also be using a new social studies series to meet state standards.
I am looking forward to an exciting year with your child. If you need to reach me at anytime during the year please call the school at 454-4700 ext. 122 and leave a message. I'll get back to you as quickly as possible. I am usually available before school from 7:00-8:00 as well. If you have an emergency or urgent message when you call, dial 0 to reach the office and the secretaries will get the information to me quickly. This is especially important if the need arises to pick up a child early and no note has been sent in with the child. Call the office and press 0 and give the information to the secretary. We can not release the child or hold them in the office without written or verbal request.
If you have any special needs for your child, that I need to be aware of, please list them on the paper below. Thank you for your support and cooperation in helping to make this year an exciting one for your child and your family.
The above information as well as a description of your child's day and year aboard the Space Station can be found at our web site http://copland.udel.edu/~lynneb/spacestationalpha.htm
