The "Resting Tree" is a Sand Hickory (Carya pallida ) located at the author's homesite. It was slated for removal in 1892, when clearing crews made way for the Richland & Petersburg Railroad. Only the resonant protests from charcoalers at Mr. Thomas' nearby coalin' camp saved it from the axeman
