Food in Newark is expensive.  Students needs to shop wisely to save money.  We have Pathmark, ACME, and Shoprite near campus.  Also there are Walmart, BJ's, COSTCO, and farmers market in driving distance.  Any food is expensive here.  In CA, 1lb baby carrot costs $1.5 usually and $1 at sales, but here costs $1.68 for usual and $1.5 for sales.

Pathmark is a 24 hr opening grocery store.  As my opinion, this place has better quality of fresh products compared with ACME or Shoprite.  If I buy fresh vegetable, I buy from this store.  This store also sell reasonable doughnuts.  It tastes OK and costs only 50 cents, while Dunkin D tastes OK but costs 80 cents for smaller ones.  ACME is a part of Albertson group.  Their products are similar to one from Albertson group.  This store is the nearest from my apartment, but I barely go there.  If you live near there, this might be OK place.  I have no idea about shoprite.

Walmart is in MD, so you have to pay 5% sales taxes and drive 7-10 miles.  You can still save a lot of money even if you spend some money on gas.  BJ's and COSTCO are membership required wholesale store.  BJ's is closer to campus, but I prefer to go to COSTCO where is 10 miles away from campus.  COSTCO carries nice wines and beers.  This COSTCO does not carry many cheap wines, and the price is $1-2 more expensive than CA stores, but you do not pay sales taxes.  I think the overall price is the same.  The food court from COSTCO does not sell Polish sausage and hotdog bread is smaller.

Farmers Market is 15 miles away from campus.  They sells the best quality food with cheap price.  If you do not mind spending alot of money on gas, this is a good place to buy grocery.  I barely go there.
