There are two main
approaches I take in my wildlife conservation and ecology classroom: problem-based
learning or PBL and service learning.
What is Problem-based
learning or PBL?
Problem-based learning (PBL)
is an instructional method that challenges students to "learn to
learn," working cooperatively in groups to seek solutions to real world
problems. These problems are used to engage students' curiosity and initiate
learning the subject matter. PBL prepares students to think critically and
analytically, and to find and use appropriate learning resources. (Barbara Duch, as posted on the UD PBL website)
What is Service Learning?
Service-learning is a
pedagogy that exposes students to the needs of the larger society, engages them
in addressing those needs through community service, and connects what they
learn in the classroom to real-world conditions. At its best, service-learning
is a powerful teaching method that allows students to reflect upon why such
conditions exist and what their democratic responsibilities are in addressing
them. (adapted from the Center for Liberal Education
and Civic Engagement, as posted on the UD Office of Service Learning website)
