Wildlife Research Experience

Research Assistant - University of Wisconsin-Madison, Madison, WI. August 1995 – May 1999. Coordinated data collection and field activities investigating morphological and genetic characteristics of desert kit fox; maintained and checked trap lines; supervised 2 technicians; acquired GPS data for trap locations for GIS analysis; assessed morphology and collected blood samples from kit fox; conducted mitochondrial DNA analysis in laboratory; analyzed and summarized previously collected den site and habitat data.

 

Field Coordinator - National Biological Survey, Texas Cooperative Wildlife Research Unit, Lubbock, TX.  May - August 1995.  Coordinated data collection and field activities on the behavior and food habits of the desert kit fox; supervised 4 technicians; monitored fox populations via null and peak radio telemetry; conducted vegetation classification, arthropod collection, assessment of lagomorph populations, and estimation of area canid population through sign counts; acquired GPS data for den sites and capture locations.

 

Intern Wildlife Biologist - U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Red Wolf Recovery Project. Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge, N.C.  January 1 - April 1. 1995.  Primary responsibilities included addressing the food and medical requirements of 20 captive red wolves, maintenance of enclosures and supply needs, computer data entry, response to requests for information, maintenance of wildlife track plots; assistance to refuge biologists to maintain and check trap lines, capture and handling of free-ranging canids, monitoring wild wolf populations through ground and aerial radio telemetry and conduct public educational programs.

 

Wildlife Technician - Department of Forestry and Natural Resources, Purdue University, West Lafayette, IN.                                                                    

Lab Technician - examined tissue and rumen samples of white tailed deer for habitat analysis and nutrition study.  Fall 1994.

 

Volunteer - assessed age structure and health of harvested deer population at hunter check stations (Fall 1994); radio-tracked raccoon population (October 1994); assisted with grounds maintenance in deer population control study (Fall 1993).

 

Wildlife Behavior Researcher and Park Volunteer - North American Wildlife Park Foundation, Battle Ground, IN.  August 1993 - 1994. Participated in captive gray wolf behavior observations during breeding season; collected and analyzed data, presented independent research paper on social behavior of a subordinate female wolf; aided in wolf care and facility maintenance; conducted educational programs for public; assisted in visitor services.

 

Scenic Artist and Falconer’s Assistant - New York Renaissance Festival, Tuxedo, N.Y.  Summers 1991 - 1994. Designed stage and set dressings, painted decorative and directional signs; falconer’s assistant in falconry exhibition, handled raptors and demonstrated birds of prey in flight, addressed questions regarding bird of prey ecology.
